Stone Buddha Ruins

The Stone Buddha Ruins are a cultural heritage site protected by the Zhengzhou Municipal Government.

The Stone Buddha Ruins are located in the hilly area of the northwestern suburbs of Zhengzhou, in the northeastern extension of the Songshan Mountain range. The terrain of the ruins area is relatively high, forming a gentle slope that is higher in the east and lower in the west. The site is well-preserved, and the area currently serves as farmland.

The ruins were discovered in 2002. In February 2005, to support the construction of the Zhengzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, the Zhengzhou Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute conducted a cultural relics survey in the eastern part of Shifo Village. They found cultural layers and ash pits on the exposed cliffs, and collected a small number of pottery fragments. Subsequently, partial drilling was carried out to determine the extent of the site. Based on the findings from the drilling and surface surveys, the site is approximately 400 meters long from east to west, 300 meters wide from north to south, covering an area of about 120,000 square meters. Among the collected pottery fragments, gray pottery predominates, featuring both cord-marked and plain surfaces, including a rim fragment of a gray pottery bowl. The exposed cliff sections revealed the presence of cultural layers and ash pits. The cultural layer is 1.5 meters thick, consisting of light gray soil that is relatively loose and contains a wealth of pottery and other artifacts. The pottery includes both clay pottery and sandy clay pottery; colors include red, gray, and brown pottery; decorative patterns feature cord marks, basket weaves, grid patterns, and plain surfaces; identifiable vessel shapes include pottery jars and bowls. Stone axes, tubular tiles, and flat tiles were also collected.
