Penggong Ancestral Hall is the memorial temple of Peng Xitian, a key advocate of local autonomy in Western Henan during the Republic of China period. Peng Xitian, courtesy name Yuting, was from Qilizhuang Village, Anziying Township, Zhenping County. In 1927, the 16th year of the Republic of China, he returned to his hometown from Feng Yuxiang’s army to promote local self-governance, eliminate banditry, and govern with integrity and care for the people. Through firm policies, he brought Zhenping to a state where “lost items were not stolen and doors were left unlocked at night,” earning widespread acclaim from all sectors of society. After his death, residents of the three counties in Western Henan built this memorial site on Tiger Gully of Xinghua Mountain in his honor to commemorate the leader of the Republican-era self-rule movement. Constructed in 1934, the 23rd year of the Republic of China, the main hall of Penggong Ancestral Hall covers an area of 60 square meters, stands 6 meters tall, is about 7 meters deep, and is 11 meters wide. It is a single-eave flush-gable building made of blue bricks, each engraved with the three characters “彭公祠” (Penggong Ancestral Hall). Inside the hall hang elegiac couplets written by notable figures of the time such as Feng Yuxiang and Yu Youren. Among them, the portrait of Peng Yuting “kneeling and singing to himself” symbolizes the ideals of “self-reliance, self-strengthening, and self-governance,” offering much food for thought. The left wing of the temple houses over ten rooms in a two-story structure, while the right side features eight corridor rooms with walls inscribed with the life story of Penggong. In front of the ancestral hall, stone steps and walls are built using the principle of echo—when you clap your hands, the sound reverberates loudly, resembling frog croaks that can be heard clearly.
