Site of Yangjiao Temple

The Site of Yangjiao Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

The Site of Yangjiao Temple is situated on a highland north of Yangjiao Temple Village, Zhugudong Village, Zhugudong Township, Yicheng District, Zhumadian City. To the southwest lies an artificial fishpond, Tan Village is 200 meters to the north, and a road leading to the government of Zhugudong Township is 100 meters to the east. A high-speed railway runs west of the site. The site is rectangular in shape, measuring 240 meters in length from north to south and 170 meters in width from east to west, covering a total area of 40,800 square meters.

- Through surveys and explorations, the cultural layer is found to be 1.5 meters thick, with rich contents including numerous red-fired earth blocks, plant ash, stones, carbon particles, etc. The surface features a large number of scattered pottery shards and stone tool fragments. Collected specimens include pottery pieces and stone tools. The pottery shards are predominantly gray pottery, followed by black pottery and red pottery. The decorative patterns mainly consist of cord marks and basket weave patterns, along with plain surfaces and some with added lumps. Identifiable vessel shapes include pottery cups, jars, basins, bowls, lids, tripods, mortars, and bowls. Most of the stone tools are polished, such as stone axes, stone spades, and stone knives. Based on the characteristics of the artifacts and decorative patterns, this site is a typical representative of the Longshan Culture.

In 1984, the site was discovered during a cultural relics survey. On June 16, 2008, it was announced by the People's Government of Henan Province as part of the fifth batch of Henan Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units. Its discovery provides a relatively typical site for the study of Neolithic Longshan Culture settlements and environmental archaeology in the Zhumadian area.
