Turtle Mountain Pagoda

Turtle Mountain Pagoda is a cultural tourism attraction.

Turtle Mountain Pagoda is located on the summit of Turtle Mountain to the west of Qianzhuang Village, Zhugudong Township, Yicheng District. It is a hexagonal-eaved, stacked-brick pagoda. Legend has it that long ago, a turtle demon stole away from Heaven and descended to the mortal world. Upon reaching the foot of Mount Le, it was captivated by the scenery and wanted to take over the land. So it cast spells, causing devastating floods that made life miserable for the people. The matter alarmed the Jade Emperor, who then sent the Heavenly Official of the Prime Radiance (Tai Bai Jin Xing) down to subdue the demon. The Heavenly Official disguised himself as an old man and approached the turtle demon, who then tried to eat him. To avoid alerting the demon, the Heavenly Official said, “I am just a passing merchant. Wait here while I finish selling my goods and I’ll bring you some delicious treats to change your mind. If you’re still not satisfied, you can eat me later.” The turtle demon agreed. When the Heavenly Official reached the area near Runing Prefecture, he spotted a towering pagoda and came up with a plan. He reached out, broke off half of the pagoda, and tucked it into his sleeve. Then, riding a cloud, he returned to the turtle demon and said, “Close your eyes and open your mouth—I’ll place something delicious inside.” The turtle demon closed its eyes and opened its mouth wide, and the Heavenly Official quickly took the broken half of the pagoda from his sleeve and pressed it down onto the demon’s back. When the turtle demon realized what had happened, it struggled desperately, but to no avail. It was soon crushed to death beneath the pagoda and later turned into a mountain, never again able to harm the people. Photo by Li Feng
