Tomb of Zigao

The Tomb of Zigao is a cultural heritage site protected at the county level in Taikang County.

The Tomb of Zigao is located 150 meters east of Ningzhuang Village, Gaoxian Township, about 1.5 kilometers northwest of Taikang County. In 1989, it was designated as a county-level cultural heritage site by the People’s Government of Taikang County.

The tomb is 2 meters high and has a perimeter of 44 meters. It is rectangular in shape, measuring 14 meters from north to south and 8 meters from east to west. Scattered Han Dynasty pottery fragments have been found around the site. Although it is widely believed to be the tomb of Zigao, it is actually a Han Dynasty tomb.

Originally, there was an ancestral hall in front of the tomb, built in the ninth year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty. It included a mountain gate, main hall, and east and west wing rooms. The mountain gate bore a plaque inscribed with: “Tomb of the Sage Gao Zigao.” All these structures have been destroyed.

Gao Zigao, also known as Chai, styled Zigao, was a native of the State of Wei during the Spring and Autumn period (some say he was from the State of Qi), and a disciple of Confucius.

Gaoxian Township: Gaoxian Township is located in the northwest of Taikang County, bordering Wangji Township to the east, Qingji Township to the south, Zhimawa Township to the west, and Zhulin Township of Qixian County to the north. The township covers a total area of 71.9 square kilometers, with 71,000 mu of arable land, a population of 49,000, and includes 29 administrative villages and 77 natural villages.

Gaoxian Township has a long history and rich culture. Historical records indicate that Gao Chai (styled Zigao), a disciple of Confucius, was a native of the State of Wei during the Spring and Autumn period. In 480 BC, amid internal strife in the State of Wei, he fled here and made a living by teaching and lecturing. He was buried here after his death.
