Last updated 2026-11-08 — If you can’t make it to Tibet in person, experience its stunning scenery through the Tibet Tourism VR series launched by the Tibet Autonomous Region Tourism Development Commission and Guofeng Panorama.

In simple terms, VR technology—short for virtual reality—uses computers to simulate a three-dimensional virtual world, providing users with sensory simulations of sight, sound, touch, and more, making them feel as though they are truly there.

Now, this technology has been applied to Tibet’s tourism projects. To help more people learn about Tibet, the Tibet Autonomous Region Tourism Development Commission has partnered with "Guofeng Panorama," a brand under Tibet Guofeng Advertising Co., Ltd., to produce VR panoramas of distinctive tourist towns and famous attractions across Tibet’s seven prefecture-level cities, fully establishing the concept of "Tibet Tourism + VR Panorama." The filming work has now entered the post-production stage, and the online version will be released soon.

Tibet boasts unparalleled natural beauty and cultural landscapes—the sacred land of humanity, heaven on earth. Each of its seven prefecture-level cities has its own unique charm: Sacred Lhasa, a journey for the soul; Majestic Shigatse, a magical journey; Tibetan Heartland Shannan, a cultural journey; Enchanting Nyingchi, an ecological journey; Bold Chamdo, a free-spirited journey; Vast Nagqu, an adventurous journey; Mysterious Ngari, a spiritual journey.

Every journey is irresistible, and with the recent release of China’s first list of characteristic towns, Tibet’s Tunba Township and Zhana County have both made the cut. Alongside comfortable, livable towns like Nyingchi’s Lulang International Tourism Town, "Apron Town" Jiedexiu, Mangkang County’s Yanjing Township—home to China’s only well-preserved traditional manual salt production method—and Gyantse Town, which bears witness to the heroic resistance against British invasion, as well as Baga Township nestled by sacred mountains and lakes, and Gyirong Township with its exotic charm, Tibet tourism has gained new highlights.

Perhaps some people still haven’t had the chance to visit Tibet, thinking it’s too far away—but when Tibet tourism meets VR panorama technology, something extraordinary happens.

At the 3rd China Tibet Tourism & Culture International Expo in 2016, the Tibet Autonomous Region Tourism Development Commission incorporated VR panorama experiences, immersive technology, and 360° dome projection—among other "cutting-edge innovations"—into the Tibet Tourism Pavilion, offering visitors a brand-new travel experience.

These modern technologies will gradually be integrated into Tibet’s tourism industry development, achieving "product informatization, resource digitization, service standardization, and regulatory intelligence," establishing a Tibet tourism information platform, and realizing an intelligent Tibet tourism industry.
