Tomb of Gu Zuo

The Tomb of Gu Zuo is a cultural heritage site protected at the county level in Taikang County.

The Tomb of Gu Zuo is located 300 meters south of Guzhuang Village, Maozhuang Town, in the southwest of Taikang County. In 1989, it was designated as a county-level cultural heritage site by the People's Government of Taikang County.

The tomb mound is 9 meters high with a circumference of 80 meters, and is conical in shape. In front of the tomb stand two 3-meter-tall stone pillars known as horse-tying posts.

According to the Chinese Biographical Dictionary, Gu Zuo was a native of Guzhuang Village, Maozhuang Township, in the southwest of Taikang County. He passed the imperial examination during the Jianwen era of the Ming Dynasty and served as the Prefect of Yingtian Prefecture in the early years of the Yongle reign. After the Ming capital was moved to Beijing, he became the Prefect of Shuntian Prefecture. In the 8th year of Yongle, he was appointed Right Censor-in-Chief, known for his uprightness. In his later years, he retired to his hometown and did many good deeds for the people of Taikang County. Stories such as "2.85 mu counted as 1 mu," "raising a righteous horse," and "the Gu Family Tower" have been passed down through generations.

Gu Zuo (1376–1446), courtesy name Liqing, was a native of Taikang. He passed the imperial examination during the Jianwen era and rose to the position of Prefect of Yingtian Prefecture during the Yongle reign. He was known for his integrity and was often compared to Bao Zheng of the Northern Song Dynasty.

During the Xuande era, he was impeached multiple times, but Gu Zuo enjoyed the deep trust of the emperor. With endorsements from figures such as Yang Shiqi, he managed to clear his name on every occasion.

Gu Zuo worked in the inner court, occupying a small private chamber and only joining other officials for official discussions. People called him "Gu the Lone Sitter." He passed away in the 11th year of the Zhengtong era (1446) and was posthumously honored with the title "Duan Su" (Solemn and Upright).
