Cangxiang Lane

Cangxiang Lane is located on the north side of Wenfeng North Street in the old city area and runs from east to west. Originally named Cangmenkou Street, it was so called before the liberation because the grain warehouses of the Anyang Prefecture Government and the Anyang County Government were situated in the eastern section of Houcang Street (now the residential compound of the Anyang County Public Security Bureau). As Cangxiang Lane was directly south of the entrance to these warehouses, it earned the name Cangmenkou Street. After the liberation, due to the passage of time and the gradual decline of the grain warehouses, coupled with the fact that Cangmenkou Street was an important thoroughfare in the old city and for historical reasons, one character from each of the two names was taken—literally meaning a combination of “grain warehouse” and “lane”—and it was renamed “Cangxiang Lane.” The lane stretches 528 meters in length and is about 4.9 meters wide, currently comprising 57 courtyards and housing 325 households. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Cangxiang Lane was lined with residences and shops belonging to merchants, featuring exquisite architecture and many wealthy business owners, which led to it being referred to as one of the “Dragon and Phoenix Streets” alongside Tianshuijing Street.
