It’s that time of year again—the chrysanthemum viewing season. November, with its crisp autumn air, is when white chrysanthemums are in full bloom. Every year, Miaoli’s Tongluo attracts large numbers of visitors who drive there to admire the flowers and take photos. Make the most of the three-week blooming period to enjoy the vast sea of white chrysanthemums that looks like a snowfall.

Tongluo Township experiences two “snowfalls” every year—one in spring with the tung blossom, and another in late autumn and early winter with the sea of blooming chrysanthemums. By mid-autumn, it’s the most beautiful time, roughly from early November to early December, with the blooming period lasting only about three weeks. The Jiuhu Plateau in Tongluo has a long history of cultivating white chrysanthemums for 30 years. Thanks to the large day-night temperature difference, high humidity, and reddish-brown soil, it provides the perfect environment for growing chrysanthemums.

This year, to promote healthy cultivation management of chrysanthemums and allow the fields to rest and recover, last year’s popular flower-viewing spot will be replaced with colorful cosmos and sunflowers. The authorities have also unveiled 4 new secret spots to view chrysanthemums. Currently, the chrysanthemum buds are gradually forming. If you want to take dreamy photos standing in a sea of flowers as white as snow, the sea of white in Miaoli’s Tongluo is definitely a great place for an autumn outing. Those wanting to capture photos of this “autumn snow” must not miss this November’s blooming season.

2016 Chrysanthemum Viewing Secret Routes Preview

Main Venue: Jiuhu Chrysanthemum Special Zone (historically the location of the “Chrysanthemum Auspiciousness Like Taro Industry Culture Festival,” along the Miaoli 38 Route at Jiuhu Section in Jiuhu Village, Tongluo Township, from Jiuhu Bridge to Tongke South Road Bridge along the route / the latest event route is under planning, expected to be announced in late October)

Secret Route 1: Along the railway line near Tongluo Railway Station (after exiting the station, you can enjoy the beautiful chrysanthemums on foot)
Secret Route 2: Zhi Lun Temple → Wenfeng Elementary School → along Shuangfeng Road (apart from chrysanthemum fields, you can also enjoy tea plantation scenery)
Secret Route 3: Miaoli Route 119A — near Miaoli Tung Blossom Park and Hakka Bridge (you can also inquire about taro-digging experiences to enjoy the rural fun of being a taro farmer for a day, please call 0912-099-131, Mrs. Chen)
Secret Route 4: Miaoli Route 27 — near the northern part of Zhongxing Industrial Park (you can cross through the industrial park from Miaoli Route 128 and Zhonglong 1st Road at the Shanjung Gas Station intersection, then head west along Ruixing North Street to arrive)

Note: As these are secret routes, most are rural paths, so you’ll need to drive yourself. Please note that some roads are winding, difficult to pass other vehicles, lack clear landmarks, and may not be found on GPS.
