Anyang Yi Garden

Anyang Yi Garden is one of the four major parks in Anyang. Located in the eastern part of Anyang city, it borders Zhonghua Road to the west, Ziwei Avenue to the south, Dengta Road to the north, and Yongming Road to the east. Covering an area of 32.08 hectares, it includes a water surface of 2.9 hectares, roads and squares of 5.5 hectares, and green space of 22.8 hectares.

Anyang is the birthplace of the Book of Changes (Yi Jing). Twenty kilometers south of Anyang lies the site where King Wen of Zhou contemplated and compiled the Yi Jing. To highlight regional characteristics and showcase the profound culture of this ancient capital, the main water body in the garden was designed in the shape of a Taiji diagram during the initial planning of Yi Garden. This combines the ancient wisdom of the Yi Jing with the construction of a modern ecological leisure park, and the park in Anyang’s eastern district was named Yi Garden. It embodies the past in the present. Therefore, among the many names suggested by the public, Yi Garden was chosen—a truly fitting name.

As one of China’s eight ancient capitals and a national historical and cultural city, our city boasts a rich cultural heritage. Yi Garden, rooted in historical and cultural accumulation while embracing the light of modern civilization, is a bold stroke of “culture.” Its completion and opening hold great significance for our city’s ongoing “Culture-Driven City Development” strategy. Specifically, this can be summarized in two points: First, the inheritance of historical culture. The “Yi” in Yi Garden refers to the Yi Jing. “King Wen was imprisoned and composed the Yi Jing.” While confined, he expanded Fuxi’s Eight Trigrams into sixty-four hexagrams, whose philosophical ideas have influenced China for over 3,000 years and will continue to do so. The main water system in Yi Garden is designed in the form of Yin-Yang fish, aiming to illustrate the concepts of the Yi Jing and pass on the culture of the Book of Changes.

The “Yi” in Yi Garden also signifies change. Change and development are a central theme in Yi culture. The Yi Jing states, “When you reach an impasse, change; through change, you find a way through.” By visiting Yi Garden, one can enjoy leisure and recreation while contemplating the development, inheritance, and evolution of traditional Chinese culture, as well as reflecting on the motion and development of all things in the universe, and the interdependence, opposition, and unity of conflicting elements. Second, the dissemination of modern culture. As an educational base for youth science popularization, Yi Garden’s cultural exhibition halls will disseminate excellent and advanced culture to visitors, especially young people. Each plant in Yi Garden is labeled with a special tag indicating the plant’s name, habits, origin, and more, serving as an excellent educational tool for botany. In addition, the performance stage built in the garden will become an important venue for amateur cultural performances by the public. All of these will strongly advance our city’s “Culture-Driven City Development” strategy.

4 Scenic Areas

Nature’s Love Poem mainly consists of natural landscape features along the central axis.

The 4 scenic areas contain 10 functional buildings, mainly including the Cultural Center, Learning First Square, Fragrant Shadow Pavilion, Drinking Red Room, Annual Rings, and Colorful Pavilion, as well as 22 scenic spots.
