Tianfushan Scenic Area

Tianfushan is located 20 kilometers east of Wendeng City and stands opposite the Kunyu Mountains. Nestled among rolling hills, it is surrounded by mountains and boasts serene valleys and pristine landscapes. Since ancient times, it has been praised as a “heaven-bestowed blessed land,” hence the name Tianfushan. Many famous mountains in China are home to temples. In the past, there were monasteries and Taoist temples here where monks and priests lived in seclusion. After the July 7th Incident, the Japanese imperialists launched a full-scale invasion of China, and eastern Shandong quickly fell under the iron heel of Japanese militarism.

To save the nation from peril, on December 24, 1937, Li Qi, Secretary of the 0 Jiaodong Special Committee, and others took advantage of Tianfushan’s strategic terrain to lead the nationally renowned Tianfushan Uprising here. They established the first people’s armed force in Jiaodong—the Third Army of the Shandong People’s Anti-Japanese Salvation Corps—and fired the first shot of the Jiaodong resistance against Japan. This made Tianfushan a temporary “Jinggangshan” of Jiaodong and an important birthplace of the region’s anti-Japanese salvation movement. The site includes five temple rooms and three east-wing rooms, which served as the temporary meeting place of the 0 Jiaodong Special Committee during the uprising. The military flag of the Tianfushan Uprising is now preserved in the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution.

Tianfushan Scenic Area is another important tourist destination in Wendeng City and a key patriotic education base in Shandong Province.
