Shalidian Site

The Shalidian Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Shandong Province.

The Shalidian Site is located on a platform 300 meters north of Shalidian Village, Wendengying Town, Wendeng City. It stretches 500 meters from north to south and 500 meters from east to west, covering a total area of 250,000 square meters. There are naturally formed seasonal gullies on both the southern and northern sides of the site. Observations from the gully cliffs show that the topsoil layer beneath the surface is 0.2 meters thick, below which lies the cultural layer, 1–3 meters thick, containing pottery shards and stone tools. The upper layer consists of blackish-gray pottery, the middle layer a mix of red and black pottery, and the lower layer is composed of sand-tempered red pottery. The pottery shards are mostly fragments of tripods, jars, basins, cups, pots, beans (dou vessels), and gui (kui vessels). Blackish-gray pottery shards are the most common, hard and shiny, with relatively thin walls — some as thin as a millimeter, resembling eggshell pottery. The pottery shard decorations include appliqué ridges, string patterns, incised lines, wavy patterns, and rope patterns. Stone tools include arrowheads, spears, chisels, and axes.

Based on the analysis of collected samples, it is identified as a Longshan Culture site from the Neolithic Age.

In 1977, the Shandong Provincial Government designated the Shalidian Site as a provincial-level protected cultural heritage site.
