Tomb of Lu Zhonglian

The Tomb of Lu Zhonglian is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Tomb of Lu Zhonglian is located southeast of Dawang Village (formerly known as Leiyecun), 2.5 kilometers northwest of Gaocheng. The old gazetteer of Gaoyuan refers to the “Ancient Ruins and Shepherd’s Songs,” one of the Eight Scenic Spots, as this very site. Both the Qingzhou Prefecture Gazetteer from the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty and the Gaoyuan County Gazetteer from the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty record that the tomb of Lu Zhonglian is situated five li northwest of (Gaoyuan) county town. His life is chronicled in Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji). During the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, two local brothers, Wang Shixing and his sibling, built the Gaojie Ancestral Hall in front of the tomb, where local officials held seasonal memorial ceremonies. A Gaojie Academy was also constructed next to the hall, endowed with 80 mu of land to provide for its operational expenses. However, due to repeated flooding, the site gradually fell into disrepair. In 1945, the tomb was still a earthen mound about several dozen zhang in diameter and roughly three zhang high. By the 1960s after the founding of the People’s Republic, the mound was about four meters high. By the 1980s, only a raised piece of land remained as the remnant.
