Tainan’s historic Lin Department Store lay dormant for over eighty years before being revitalized and reopened as a cultural and creative department store in 2014, becoming one of the must-visit attractions in Tainan. To celebrate the first anniversary of its reopening on June 14, Lin Department Store is hosting a special Downtown Tainan Modern Parade, inviting visitors of all ages to join in the celebration and revelry.

After being dormant for over 80 years, Lin Department Store reopened on June 14, 2014, under the management of Gaoqing Fashion. Now marking its first anniversary, the store held a warm-up event on May 22—a flash mob performance collaboration between Chicken Dung Vine Dance Troupe and Lin Department Store’s Gaoqing team. Actors dressed in Japanese colonial-era costumes suddenly appeared on the second-floor balcony, performing nostalgic acts that transported the audience back to the era.

6Month14On this day, Lin Department Store has organized the Downtown Tainan Modern Parade, led by city mascots from Taiwan and Japan. The parade will start from the soon-to-be-demolished China City, symbolizing the rebirth of Tainan’s vibrancy—just as the reopening of Lin Department Store did. This is a major city event and a celebration for its citizens, much like how Lin Department Store has become a shared memory for the community. After the parade, the Chicken Dung Vine Dance Troupe will perform a dance drama story from the Showa period and recreate the scene of Lin Department Store scattering candies from upstairs during the Japanese era.
