A mysterious treehouse wonderland has emerged in Taipei’s Xinyi District!

The “Hexing Coal Mine” in Taipei’s Xinyi District was revived after the city government renovated its surrounding environment. Through word of mouth among visitors, it has become a new and distinctive attraction in Taipei. But aside from the coal mine, many may not know that next to the “Hexing Coal Mine” stands a lush and thriving old banyan tree, whose roots tightly entwine around a red-brick house—resembling the balloon-bound cottage from the movie “Up,” on the verge of lifting off. This breathtaking “treehouse” spectacle leaves every visitor in awe!

To achieve disaster prevention and mitigation goals, the Department of Urban Development has recently carried out renovations along the Old Pi Stream. The “Hexing Coal Mine” and “treehouse” near the stream have undergone comprehensive environmental revitalization, creating a new leisure and recreation destination for residents while also serving an environmental education function. The renovation of Old Pi Stream employs eco-engineering techniques such as block-stone revetment, timber pile cutoff walls, and pile-driven fence grids, making full use of natural materials. These methods are not only highly permeable and safe but also aesthetically pleasing.

The “Hexing Coal Mine” now offers expanded highlights, with improvements and revitalization of the previously dilapidated areas nearby, allowing visitors to view the treehouse up close and activating the overall recreational route. Visitors can walk along the brick-red flooring and follow the imagery of mining cart tracks into a “time tunnel” to admire the “Journey of Coal” ceramic mural. After exploring the “Hexing Coal Mine” and the “Miner Xiaojia,” they can also visit the “treehouse” to experience the wonders of nature. It’s as if the heyday of the Hexing Coal Mine mining operation flashes before your eyes—the saplings from back then have now grown into towering trees reaching the sky, offering a vivid sense of the old mining area’s charm and the vitality of nature.
