Xiaozhan Town: Located between the Dagukou coastal defense and the urban area of Tianjin, it served as a strategic barrier between Beijing and Tianjin. It was a place where armies could advance to defend passes or retreat to maneuver freely, making it a historically significant military garrison and defense site. After the Tianjin Massacre in 1870, Li Hongzhang, Viceroy of Zhili, deployed his subordinate Zhou Shengchuan’s “Sheng Army” to train at Machang in Qing County, Zhili, while also overseeing the construction of Xincheng Fort. To facilitate transportation, the Sheng Army built the Machang-Xincheng Road, establishing waystations along the route — with a major station every 20 kilometers and a minor one every 5 kilometers. Thus, this small town earned its distinctive name — “Xiaozhan” (Little Station).
