Located in Tainan City, Lin Department Store is the only department store in Taiwan that still has a rooftop Shinto shrine. It was the largest department store in southern Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. Celebrating its 85th anniversary in December, Lin Department Store has been honored with the 2016 DFA Design for Asia Award, the most prestigious prize in Asia, as the perfect gift.

Lin Department Store opened on December 5, 1932, at 2-chome, Suematsu-cho (now the intersection of Zhongzheng and Zhongyi Roads). With its vintage architectural charm, it sparked a cultural renaissance among the general public in Tainan. Under the revitalization by its management team, Gaoqing Fashion, the store has rightfully claimed this prestigious award, showcasing the new ideas and creativity that historic buildings can inspire. This year’s “Tainan Modern Parade” was held on December 3, collaborating with several universities and colleges in Tainan to create distinctive costumes that brought back the glorious and prosperous historical culture of Tainan.
