The Timeless Icon of Taiwan: The Lin Family Department Store Wins an International Design Award

Located in Tainan City, the Lin Family Department Store is currently the only department store in Taiwan with a rooftop shrine. It was the largest department store in southern Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. The 85-year-old Lin Family Department Store will celebrate its anniversary in December and has been honored with the 2016 DFA Design for Asia Award, the most prestigious prize in the region, as the perfect gift.

The Lin Family Department Store opened on December 5, 1932, at 2-chome, Bunkyocho (now the intersection of Zhongzheng Road and Zhongyi Road), and its nostalgic architectural style helped spark a cultural renaissance among the general public in Tainan. Thanks to the revitalization by the high-end fashion team at Gao Qing Fashion, the store has rightfully claimed this major award, showcasing the innovative and creative potential of heritage buildings. This year’s “Modern Tainan Parade” took place on December 3, where multiple universities in Tainan collaborated to create unique costumes and styles, recreating the once-glorious and prosperous cultural history of Tainan.
