Ruins of the Iron Gate Pass

The ruins of the Iron Gate Pass are a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Shandong Province.

The ruins of the Iron Gate Pass are located in Qianguan Village, Tingluo Town, Lijin County. The site stretches 42 meters from north to south and 30 meters from east to west, covering an area of 1,260 square meters. The Iron Gate Pass was an important pass at the mouth of the former Daqing River, renowned as the “Iron Gate Locking the Waves.” It was established during the Jin Dynasty to control the maritime dangers, featuring city walls and temples. A garrison post was set up here during the Ming Dynasty. Both the Ming and early Qing Dynasties saw it as a bustling hub for water and land transport and a key site for salt shipment. After the Yellow River changed its course into the Daqing River in 1855 (the fifth year of the Xianfeng reign in the Qing Dynasty) and flowed into the sea, the Iron Gate Pass was eventually silted up by Yellow River sediment by 1886 (the twelfth year of the Guangxu reign). Later generations lamented its decline with the poem: “By the Fengguo Field, I ask of the old camp, / How many times did troops station here in days of yore? / Till now, by the desolate ruins under moonlight, / Sounds still echo through the night once more.”

Tingluo Town: Tingluo Town is located in the northeastern part of the county, 38.7 kilometers from the county seat, and governs 72 natural villages and 73 villagers' committees. It has a total of 9,167 households and a population of 31,711, including 15,951 males and 15,760 females, with 1,852 non-agricultural residents.
