South Lake Park in Cangzhou

Situated in the downtown area on the east side of the canal in Cangzhou City, South Lake is the largest natural water body in the urban area, spanning 13 hectares. The lake has large areas of reeds and an island covered with lush trees and inhabited by numerous birds. Incomplete statistics show that over 10 rare bird species, such as the greater spotted eagle, Japanese white-eye, Oriental reed warbler, and kingfisher, live on the island. The island is a unique bird habitat and natural landscape in the urban area of Cangzhou.

In 2005, the municipal government invested 28 million yuan to renovate South Lake. The project included a complete dredging of the lakebed, the construction of revetments along the lake, the installation of a boardwalk leading to the island, the building of a musical fountain and a water screen movie system, and the paving of a lakeside path.

After the renovation of South Lake was completed, South Lake Park became the largest waterside park in Cangzhou. With its elegant environment, clear blue water, and open skies, it has become an important destination for locals to relax, unwind, and enjoy nature. During the renovation, concerns were raised by environmental advocates about the impact on the bird habitats on the island. Currently, no birds are known to reside on the island.
