Since its opening in 1926, the Tainan Canal has inherited the commercial transport function of the ancient canal of Taiwan Prefecture City for nearly two hundred years, becoming an important channel for trade and passenger transport in the Tainan area, while also carrying the development of Tainan city and even Taiwanese history. Now, the Tainan Canal water cruise has begun, allowing everyone to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Tainan waterfront.

The canal cruise allows visitors to admire from the boat attractions such as the Anping Recreation Pier, Fisherman’s Wharf, Old Anping Customs, bridges along the route, Canal Diamond Park, mangroves, Anping Commercial Port, Lin Mo-niang Park, and the De Yang warship, showcasing the waterfront charm. In addition, the Tainan City Government is actively planning improvements to the canal’s water quality, shoreline park facilities, public art, and lighting environments, aiming to further enhance the tourism experience and strive to make the canal a top-tier tourist brand.

In terms of the scenic views along the route, among the 12 bridges over the Tainan Canal, the Lin’an Bridge and the New South Bridge (also known as the Black Bridge) have the lowest clearance. To overcome the issue of low bridge heights, specially designed flat-bottom boats that can pass under the bridges have been created, and the tides are observed daily to time the passage before high tide. If the tide is high during the cruise, all passengers must bow their heads and bend down to pass under the bridges — an alternative experience that’s quite fun. In addition, foundational environmental lighting features such as the night sensory area at the Old Anping Customs, the sunset-themed lighting on the Jinchengli Activity Center building, the sailboat-themed lighting at the recreation pier, and the linear lighting on the riverbank railings are also scheduled to be completed next year, greatly enhancing the visual enjoyment of the cruise.

Passengers depart from the Fisherman’s Wharf at Anyi Bridge, passing through 12 bridges including Anyi Bridge and Jinhua Bridge. The entire 10-kilometer journey takes about one hour. Not only can you enjoy the landscape of Tainan from the canal perspective and experience the unique thrill of bending down to pass under bridges within arm’s reach, but you’ll also spot fish jumping out of the water along the way, making the trip full of surprises.
