Hongjitang Traditional Chinese Medicine Cultural Tourism Industrial Park

The Hongjitang Traditional Chinese Medicine Cultural Tourism Industrial Park is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Hongjitang Traditional Chinese Medicine Cultural Tourism Industrial Park is located within the Linnuo Science and Technology Park, three kilometers east of the Xingcun Overpass in Jinan. The park boasts lush vegetation, and all its buildings are constructed in the classical Ming and Qing architectural style, giving off an antique charm. It includes over 20 groups of classical building complexes such as office buildings, the Le Jingyu Memorial Hall, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum, a workshop showcasing the handmade production of Ejiao, the Hongjitang Hospital, and the Wellness Hall.

There is an artificial lake in the park named Yuquan Lake, which is a scaled-down replica of Jinan’s Daming Lake, adding a touch of fun. Additionally, leveraging the strong solar energy technology of the Linnuo Group, all street lamps in the park are powered by solar energy. Even the large waterwheel landscape in the artificial lake is driven to rotate by solar power.

According to the director of the office of Shandong Hongjitang Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd., the park integrates modern pharmaceutical production, the dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine culture, health and wellness leisure, industrial tourism, and film and television shooting. It encompasses health industry sectors such as traditional Chinese medicine, Ejiao, museums, traditional Chinese medicine hospitals, medicinal cuisine, and distilleries. In the future, it aims to build a comprehensive “medicine, wellness, food, and healthcare” big health industry chain. This includes research and development of health products such as proprietary Chinese medicines, herbal pastes, health supplements, and foods, as well as medical and health tourism services and the dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine culture. The goal is to create an ecologically superior and culturally rich health demonstration park that combines science education, public welfare, and health and wellness leisure.

“The park has also developed a dedicated medicinal botanical garden, primarily cultivating authentic medicinal herbs from Shandong, establishing a full-chain display from cultivation to specimen,” said Fan Shengci, deputy director of the Hongjitang Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute. The focus is on both educational value and cultural promotion, while also preserving the germplasm resources of authentic medicinal plants from Shandong and protecting the genetic resources and biodiversity of the region’s medicinal flora.

The park has created four tour routes

To develop industrial tourism, well-planned tour routes are essential. Based on the park’s industrial layout and scenic spots, and guided by visitor needs, Hongjitang has initially designed four tour routes, which are currently being further refined.

The four routes are: a production-focused tour route (Ejiao Factory No. 2 – Ejiao Office Building – Linnuo Exhibition Hall – Formulation Workshop – Extraction Workshop – Muskone Workshop – Hongjitang Ejiao Workshop – Hongjitang Museum), a traditional culture-focused tour route (Confucius Square – Hongjitang Cultural Relief Wall – Le Jingyu Memorial Hall – Hongjitang Museum – Hongjitang Ejiao Workshop – Cultural Square), a science education-focused tour route (Linnuo Exhibition Hall – Cultural Square – Medicinal Botanical Garden – Hongjitang Research Institute – Hongjitang Museum – Hongjitang Cultural Corridor – Hongjitang Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital); and a natural scenery-focused tour route (Linnuo Exhibition Hall – Confucius Square – Yuquan Lake – Medicinal Botanical Garden – Cultural Square).

When speaking of Hongjitang, one cannot overlook “Ejiao.” As early as 1909, Hongjitang pioneered the “Nine-Day Refined Extraction and Refining Method” for making Ejiao, utilizing the unique spring water of Jinan. In 1915, Hongjitang Ejiao won the gold medal at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition, marking the earliest instance of Chinese medicine and healthcare products gaining international recognition and the highest honor achieved on the global stage to date.

Today, the Ejiao workshop of Hongjitang has fully restored the traditional handmade production techniques of Ejiao. A pure gold gelatin cauldron, built with an investment of 12 million yuan, replicates the “Nine-Day Refined Extraction and Refining Method.” At the same time, visitors can tour the Ejiao production workshops to learn about the entire production process of Ejiao.
