Site Commemorating Chairman Mao’s Inspection of Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences

The Site Commemorating Chairman Mao’s Inspection of Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences is a Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

Chairman Mao Zedong visited the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences twice—on August 9, 1958, and September 21, 1959. In December 1977, the site was listed as a “Provincial Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit” in Shandong Province and marked with a commemorative stele. To preserve history and honor this care, the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences decided to construct the memorial site, reinstall the commemorative stele, and erect a bronze statue of Chairman Mao.

The memorial site is located in the southern part of the core research and development zone of the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It covers an area of 14,933 square meters, with a total project investment of over 3 million yuan. The Academy History Exhibition Hall built within the site was originally the office building of the academy headquarters in the 1950s. It is one of the oldest existing buildings of the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences and also a historical witness to Chairman Mao’s two visits.

The statue of Chairman Mao inspecting the academy is a group sculpture made of five figures, crafted in round sculpture technique with brass material and bronze coloring. The statue of Chairman Mao stands 4.5 meters tall, majestic in form and amiable in expression, recreating the scene of his second visit to the cotton experimental field at the academy. It showcases the great leader’s deep concern for people’s livelihood and the vivid moment of him engaging with grassroots realities.
