Bitter Lettuce Spring

Also known as "Lettuce Spring," Bitter Lettuce Spring is located beneath the northern cliff of Yuanhong Valley in Liubu Town. The spring water flows out from crevices in the mountain rock and never dries up throughout the year. Originally, the spring pool was shaped like a well, but it has now been covered with stone slabs. The water flows through a hidden channel underground, descending along the mountain slope toward the northwest into the grounds of the "Roman Manor" owned by the Jinan Railway Bureau. There, it resurfaces above ground, cascading down an artificial hill made of stacked rocks, forming a 3-meter-wide and 2-meter-high waterfall. After traveling about 15 meters through another hidden channel, the water flows into an artificially built swimming pool on the manor grounds. The pool remains crystal-clear and cool year-round, maintaining a relatively constant temperature as it is fed by natural flowing spring water. At the northwest end of the pool, a hidden channel carries the water into a lush, tree-shaded valley, where it eventually joins Cha Jiu River, making it one of the sources of the Jinyang River.

Despite the word "bitter" in its name, the spring water is actually sweet and delicious due to the local geology, which consists of Muyu stone. This makes it ideal for brewing tea without leaving behind any limescale. Beside Bitter Lettuce Spring stands a stele inscribed with the poem "Bitter Official Spring" by the renowned modern landscape poet Kong Fu.

It was once listed among the Seventy-Two Famous Springs of the Jin, Ming, and Qing dynasties.
