Xigengdao Street

“Donggengdao, Xigengdao, Wangfu Pool and Erlang Temple” is a well-known folk rhyme among the locals of old Jinan, referring to four historic streets in the city.

Among them, Xigengdao Street is a small alley beside the famous Baifu Pool spring in Jinan. It stretches from Qushuiting Street in the north to Furong Lane in the south, paved with flagstones and extending over 400 meters in total. It was historically used as the route for night watchmen, hence the name. As an important hub of Jinan’s old neighborhoods and thanks to its unique charm, it has attracted countless domestic and international visitors.

The street of Xigengdao is clean and tidy, with houses on both sides featuring white walls and black tiles. The flagstones laid along the road are neat and classic, exuding an old-world charm. Strolling down the alley, you can get a glimpse of the courtyards of century-old residences — all small in size and equipped with traditional water wells known as "ya shui jing" (levered wells). These authentic flavors of Jinan are what make this cultural ancient city so cherished and memorable.
