Pipa Spring

Pipa Spring is located in the southeast corner of the City Moat Park, west of Black Tiger Spring. It gets its name from the gurgling sound of the water, which resembles the tones of a pipa (a traditional Chinese lute). The spring pool is a square stone basin measuring 6 meters in length, 5 meters in width, and 2 meters in depth. It is surrounded by carved stone railings. The pool extends into the city moat, standing about 1 meter above the water surface. There are two tiers of stone steps along the outer wall of the pool. As the spring water overflows and flows down the steps, it creates a pleasant sound, much like the notes of a pipa being played. To the east of the spring lies Pipa Bridge, and to the west stands the Qingyin Pavilion. Visitors on the bridge or in the pavilion can fully enjoy the sounds of the spring and admire the scenery.

Bubbles rise continuously from the bottom of the pool, bursting on the surface with a hissing sound. On quiet nights, this sound resembles the tones of a pipa, hence the name. Originally an irregular natural spring, it was renovated in 1965. The pool walls were built with bluestone, and the surroundings were adorned with carved stone railings. Water overflows from the northern outlet, cascading down two levels of stone steps into the city moat, resembling silk strings as it strikes the water and produces sound. To the east of the spring is a stone arch bridge built in 1964, named “Pipa Bridge” after the spring. To the south is a lofty pavilion that juts out from the shore, called the “Qingyin Pavilion.” Sitting inside the pavilion, visitors can enjoy the clear, melodious sounds of Pipa Spring while taking in the spring’s graceful appearance and the surrounding scenery.
