The German-style architectural complex of Huangtai Station

The German-style architectural complex of Huangtai Station is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

Jinan’s Huangtai Station is located at the northernmost end of Shanda Road, at No. 15 Huangtai South Road. Passing through a somewhat dilapidated gate, you enter a small square, where a row of pink German-style buildings stands on the north side of the square, with the prominent words “Huangtai Station” written on them. It is the only original station preserved in Jinan and along the entire Jiaoji Railway, boasting important historical and cultural relic value. Many films depicting historical events from the early 20th century were shot using Huangtai Station as an exterior location.

Huangtai Railway Station is situated at the 378-kilometer and 612-meter mark of the Jiaoji Railway. Since its official establishment in 1904, it has a history of nearly a hundred years. The station faces south with its back to the north and is a typical example of German-style architecture. It stands in distant reflection with the Hongjialou Church complex to its southeast, making it one of the few Western-style buildings in Jinan. The station building includes a two-story office block and a single-story ticketing and waiting hall, both rectangular with three bays, featuring rubble stone foundations and cement textured walls. The roof of the station also features small spires—one tall and two short—arranged in a peak formation, giving it a rustic and robust appearance, somewhat resembling medieval German castles. However, as the building is right next to the railway tracks, it’s impossible to capture the full northern view of Huangtai Station, which is a pity as photos cannot reflect its complete appearance.

The Jiaoji Railway is the earliest railway built in Shandong Province, with a total length of 412 kilometers and 64 small stations along the route. Traveling east from Jinan Station, the first station is Beiguan Station, and the second is Huangtai Station. All trains running along the Jiaoji Railway pass through this station. Initially called Dongguan Station, and also known as Jinan East Station, people still commonly refer to it as Huangtai Station. Through three technical renovations, Huangtai Station was upgraded from a fourth-class small station to a second-class station by 1994. This two-story building used to house the ticket office and waiting hall. Nowadays, trains no longer stop here, and the station has been closed.

How many fascinating stories must these old buildings have witnessed? It’s just that we often focus too much on grand scenes and overlook the rich details of everyday life, causing those stories to go unnoticed and gradually fade into obscurity. With some exploration, there are surely unforgettable tales waiting to be discovered.

On December 7, 2006, the German-style architectural complex of Huangtai Station was announced by the People’s Government of Shandong Province as part of the third batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Shandong.
