East Fo Valley Cliff Carvings and Statues

The East Fo Valley cliff carvings and statues are a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The East Fo Valley cliff carvings and statues in Jinan, Shandong (Eastern Wei to Tang dynasties) are located 15 kilometers east of Jinan.

The East Fo Valley grotto statues are located at the end of East Fo Valley northeast of Kuang Village in Shilihe Town, where the ruins of the Prajna Temple can be found. Ascending the steps from the East Fo Valley Scenic Archway, you will find a hundred-meter-long, dozens-of-meters-high cliff inscribed with over 20 statues in the Sui and Tang styles. In the 29th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1903), the hermit Ye Shan inscribed “Cloud Hall and Spring Kitchen,” while in the 9th year of Guangxu (1883), a large “Buddha” character and over 30 other inscriptions of varying sizes were carved, including “A World Apart,” “Exquisite Fairyland,” “Beautiful Forests and Valleys,” and “Lesser Treasures of Dongting.”
