The Water Margin Film and Television City was the filming base for the 80-episode new version of "Water Margin" and is a key attraction on Shandong Province’s Water Margin tourism route. The site primarily includes replica Song Dynasty structures such as government offices, hero residences, street shops, market vendors, restaurants and teahouses, religious temples, prison camps, Purple Stone Street, Water Street, the Prince’s Mansion, the Grand Tutor’s Mansion, the Grand Commandant’s Mansion, brothels, Fanlou, the瓮城 (barbican gatehouse), Imperial Dragon Square, and the Imperial Road of Dongjing Bianliang. These elements create a strong traditional ambiance, with exquisite craftsmanship and realistic details that authentically evoke the historical setting of the Northern Song Dynasty.

After completing the filming of the 80-episode TV series "Water Margin," other productions such as "Swordsman’s Romance," "The Case of Bu," "Criminal Master," and "The New Adventures of Chu Liuxiang" were also filmed here. The Water Margin Film and Television City has now become a comprehensive tourism service area integrating cultural experience, local customs display, leisure vacation, film and television production, and tourist transit, greatly enhancing Dongping’s tourism reception capacity and service level.

The Water Margin filming site is another film base invested in by China Central Television for the production of the large-scale TV series "Water Margin," following the Tang City scenic area and the Three Kingdoms filming site. It is adjacent to the Three Kingdoms site, borders Taihu Lake to the west, and covers an area of 580 acres, with 1,500 acres of water area available for shooting. The main landscape of the Water Margin site can be divided into three major sections: the Prefecture and County District, the Capital City District, and the Liangshan District.

In late 2010, Dongping Water Margin Film and Television City was successfully selected as one of the “New Cultural Landmarks of Qilu,” signifying that it has become one of the most representative and distinctive scenic spots showcasing Shandong Province’s Water Margin culture and tourism route.
