LIMINGWO CLIFF CARVINGS

Located on the mountainside of Liugong Mountain in Banjiudian Town, Dongping County, the carvings are arranged in a straight line running east-west, stretching 14 meters in length. There are 49 Buddhist statues of various sizes, all from the Tang Dynasty. The tallest stands 176 cm, and the smallest is only 10 cm.

The carvings are divided into three periods. The first, from the "Chang'an Year," mainly features three large statues of Amitabha Buddha. All are dressed in robes with double collars hanging loosely, the fabric thin and clinging to the body, with plump facial features, slender eyebrows and eyes, and bodies wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, presenting a strong and powerful aesthetic. The halos are double-layered peach-shaped flame patterns with painted colors, and the inner layer includes seven miniature Buddha figures. The second period, from the "Eighth Year of Kaiyuan," features carvings that are slightly less refined than those of the first period but retain largely similar characteristics. The third period, from the "Fourteenth Year of Xiantong," shows carvings with thick, clay-like clothing folds, round ball-like heads, plump and round body shapes, and relatively unattractive facial features, reflecting the decline in the quality of Tang Dynasty stone carvings. The LIMINGWO CLIFF CARVINGS are a key cultural heritage site under the protection of Shandong Province.
