Zhongtianmen

Zhongtianmen is the junction point for both the eastern and western routes of the Mount Tai climb. It marks the halfway point to the summit and is a necessary stop for both ascending and descending visitors. To the north of Zhongxin Mountain lies Dongxi, commonly known as Dazhigou, which was historically part of the eastern climbing route to Mount Tai but has since been abandoned.

Zhongtianmen was built during the Qing Dynasty and features a two-pillar, single-arch stone memorial archway. In ancient times, Mount Tai was home to many tigers. The ancients built a temple north of the archway to worship the Black Tiger God. Today, the temple houses a statue of the Wealth God Zhao Gongming riding a tiger and holding a whip. To the east is an antique-style teahouse, to the southwest is Zhongxi Hotel, and to the northwest is the Zhongtianmen Cable Car Station.

Zhongtianmen is located on the ridge of Huangxian Ridge, at an elevation of 847 meters. Huangxian Ridge gets its name from the yellowish-red hue of its soil. To the east of Huangxian Ridge lies Zhongxin Mountain. In 1989, Taiwanese compatriot Chen Yingjie donated funds to build Cien Pavilion at the mountain’s summit. The pavilion houses stones donated by fellow Taiwanese from Penghu, along with an inscription expressing the hope for the early reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Zhongtianmen is surrounded by towering ridges and expansive valleys, with pavilions and towers clustered nearby. To the east stands Zhongxin Mountain, which rises abruptly and is known for its scenic beauty—ideal for watching sunrises and sunset glows. To the west stretches Fenghuang Ridge, where visitors can gaze into the distance at the majestic form of Aolai Peak and look down upon the renewed cityscape. Standing beneath the archway and looking north, one sees the towering peaks of Mount Tai, with surrounding mountains encircling it, lush forests, flowing springs, and cable cars soaring overhead, forming a naturally picturesque scene.

1. Take bus routes 14, 19, 45, K37, K3, or K49 and get off at Hongmen Station to reach the Hongmen entrance of Mount Tai.

2. Take bus routes 19, K37, K39 Inner Loop, K39 Outer Loop, K3, or K49 and get off at Tianwai Village Station to reach the Tianwai Village entrance of Mount Tai.

3. Take bus route 19 and get off at Tianzhu Peak Scenic Area Station to reach the Tianzhu Peak entrance.

4. Take bus routes K16 or K49 and get off at Taohuayu Station to reach the Taohuayu entrance.
