Tai'an Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism attraction and a patriotic education base.

Tai'an Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is situated at the southern foot of Mount Tai and the sunny side of Mount Jin. Established in 1953, it has 500 unique blue-brick tombs and 14 large granite tombs, covering an area of over 80 acres. In 1989, it was approved by the Shandong Provincial People's Government as one of the first batch of provincial-level key martyr memorial buildings under protection. In the same year, the people of Tai'an voluntarily donated 1.27 million yuan to renovate and expand the cemetery.

After the renovation and expansion, the main structures of the Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery include a memorial archway, mourning square, monument, rear stele, martyrs’ tomb cluster, martyrs’ ashes hall, and revolutionary history exhibition hall. These were respectively named patriotic education bases by the Ministry of Civil Affairs in 1995, the Propaganda Department of the Shandong Provincial Committee in 1998, and the Propaganda Department of the Tai'an Municipal Committee. In 2000, it was recognized as an advanced unit in creating a civilized industry within the civil affairs system of the province. In 2001, it received the title of Tai'an Municipal Civilized Unit. In January 2002, it was named a Shandong Provincial National Defense Education Base, and in 2006, it became a Shandong Provincial Education Base for Caring for the Next Generation.

Over the decades, party committees and governments at all levels have attached great importance to the construction and management of Tai'an Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery. In 1998, it was included in the practical projects of the Tai'an Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government. An investment of 3 million yuan was made for high-standard greening and beautification, transforming the cemetery into a park-like space. Landscaped and garden-styled, it now features three distinct thematic zones with different functions: the front zone themed “White Flowers Embrace the Spirits of Heroes”; the tomb area and its sides themed “Red Flowers and Green Leaves Accompany Loyal Souls”; and other areas themed “Autumn Colors of Mount Jin.” The overall green coverage of the cemetery exceeds 90%, with an artificial water area of 1,500 square meters, over 50 spotlights and lawn lights, and more than 7,600 various trees and flowering shrubs. It has truly become a base for promoting patriotic education and a garden-style scenic area for citizens to rest and visit. At the same time, the original exhibition rooms were renovated and reorganized, and renamed the Tai'an Revolutionary History Exhibition Hall.

The entire cemetery is built along the mountain, using the mountain’s form to enhance its presence, integrating mountain, cemetery, and garden into a majestic whole. The overall design is rigorous and scientific, emphasizing artistic conception. The design style reflects traditional characteristics while also incorporating modern elements.

The cemetery is divided into two main sections: the mourning area and the tomb area. The mourning area consists of the monument, mourning square, and memorial archway. At the southern entrance of the cemetery stands a 7.7-meter-high, 14.8-meter-wide three-arched antique-style memorial archway with national characteristics. Ascending 2,200 square meters of mourning square located in the center of the cemetery, on the northern side, 40 steps symbolizing the 40th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic rise up to the 34-meter-high monument. The monument is constructed from white Tai'an granite, with an abstract design of three rifles symbolizing the Chinese revolutionary truth that “political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.” The seven gilded characters “Revolutionary Martyrs Monument” shine brilliantly in the sunlight. The east, west, and south sides of the monument base feature large modern-style bas-reliefs, while the north side is inlaid with a 13.28-square-meter Tai'an red marble plaque engraved with the inscription. The tomb area houses the remains of 514 martyrs, including 335 unnamed ones.

The tomb area is centered around a 140-meter-long pathway, with 14 large granite tombs and 500 blue-brick tombs arranged on both sides in terraced rows, uniquely aligned. Viewed from south to north, the entire tomb area resembles a majestic and solemn formation, as if the martyrs are still standing guard, protecting today’s peace and happiness. At the northern end of the pathway lies a black marble rear stele, lying horizontally and forming a strong visual contrast with the upright monument.

The rear stele bears the gilded calligraphy of Mao Zedong: “To die for the people’s benefit is heavier than Mount Tai,” highlighting and elevating the essence of the cemetery.

The renovated Revolutionary Exhibition Hall features high-standard planning and design, with refined and moving exhibits and modern display methods. The exhibition is divided into six zones and four major themes: “The Spark of Tai’an and Wen,” “The Flames of Anti-Japanese Resistance,” “The Winds of Liberation,” and “Immortal Martyrs.” Through text and images, it recreates the arduous and remarkable journey of the people of Tai’an under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party during different periods.

Every year, over 100,000 people visit Tai'an Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery with deep reverence to mourn and pay tribute to the revolutionary martyrs. Various commemorative activities such as oath-taking ceremonies for joining the Party, military service, and the Young Pioneers are held here. It has become a key site for the people of Tai’an, especially the youth, to receive revolutionary tradition and patriotic education, making positive contributions to the advancement of the city’s two civilizations.
