Wulisanxian Scenic Area

Wulisanxian Scenic Area is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

Yutai County boasts a long history and rich culture, and is widely known as the “Hometown of Filial Piety and Virtue.” As early as six to seven thousand years ago, the Dongyi Taihao tribe inhabited this area. Ancient sites within the county, such as Qixia Gudui, have revealed early cultures created by the ancestors of Yutai, including the Longshan Culture and the Shang-Zhou Culture. During the Spring and Autumn Period, this place was called Tangyi, and in the early Warring States Period it was known as Fangyu. After the Qin dynasty unified China, the counties of Fangyu and Huling were established. It wasn’t until the first year of the Baoying era in the Tang dynasty (762 AD) that it was named “Yutai,” due to the presence of the Fish-Watching Terrace where Duke Yin of Lu once visited. To this day, the tale of the “Five Li and Three Sages” remains widely celebrated. The “Three Sages” refer to Min Ziqian, Fan Zichi, and Mi Zijian, all of whom were among Confucius’s seventy-two disciples. After Confucius’s passing, Min Ziqian guarded his tomb for three years. Later, to escape the chaos of war, Min Ziqian, Fan Zichi, and Mi Zijian relocated from the capital of the State of Lu (present-day Qufu, Shandong Province) to Tangyi (present-day Yutai County, Shandong Province), where they set up a lecture platform and taught hundreds of students. Since the homes of these three sages were no more than five li apart, they became known as the “Five Li and Three Sages.” Among them, Min Ziqian was especially renowned for his virtue and filial piety. One winter, while driving a carriage with his father, he lost his grip on the reins due to the cold. His father struck him with a whip, hitting the cotton-padded coat made by his stepmother. When the feathers flew out, his father realized what had happened and, furious, decided to divorce his wife. Kneeling before his father, Min Ziqian pleaded earnestly: “If mother stays, only one son suffers the cold; if she leaves, three sons will be left without warmth!” Touched by his words, his parents were moved to reconciliation, and the family was eventually reunited in harmony. This is the timeless story of “The Filial Son and the Reed-Covered Coat.” Confucius once praised him, saying, “How filial Min Ziqian is!”
