Badashanren Meihu Scenic Area
The Badashanren Meihu Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
The Badashanren Meihu Scenic Area is located in Qingyunpu District, Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. Centered around Badashanren—a master painter hailed as one of “China’s Top Ten Cultural and Artistic Figures” by UNESCO and praised by Zheng Banqiao as “renowned across the land”—the area highlights traditional culture as its core theme, Meihu’s ecological beauty as its connecting thread, and forms a historical, cultural, and ecological scenic destination in the Jiangnan urban context.
The scenic area features winding streams, shaded greenery, and picturesque landscapes. It spans a planned area of approximately 3,200 acres and consists of seven functional zones: Ink Painting Zone, Cultural Expo Zone, Water Town Charm Zone, Three Friends of Winter Zone, Farming Leisure Zone, Meihu Sages Reflection Zone, and Comprehensive Entertainment Zone. It includes over seventy attractions such as “Three Museums, Three Residences, Two Gardens, Two Streets, Two Squares, Two Courtyards, One Water Body, One Path, One Corridor, One Pavilion, One Tower, One Island, One Pagoda, and Ten Forests.”
The development of the scenic area fully taps into the historical and cultural resources of Badashanren while leveraging the ecological advantages of the Meihu water system. Adapting to local conditions and terrain, it creates landscape features that highlight Gan culture and local characteristics, aiming to restore the historical appearance of Qingyunpu District as much as possible. At the same time, it actively incorporates the essence of architectural and garden design from various regions, artificially crafting a grand-scale, beautifully scenic, and uniquely distinctive “Jiangnan Urban Historical-Cultural Ecological Scenic Area.”
Water Town Charm Zone—Highlighting the ecological beauty of Meihu, this zone emphasizes the “bridge” culture of the Jiangnan water towns. Over 30 ancient bridges of varying sizes and styles are condensed into the landscape design. Meanwhile, ecological scenery dominated by plants such as peach blossoms, weeping willows, cherry blossoms, and azaleas is created on the green islands divided by the waterways, achieving a picturesque effect in all four seasons.
The Meihu Badashanren project proposes to take traditional culture as the main axis, the Badashanren Memorial Hall as the core, and the Meihu water system as the link. It aims to comprehensively integrate cultural resources such as the Badashanren Memorial Hall, Meihu, the hometown of Mei Ruo’ao, and the Cheng Yunxian Sculpture Art Museum, developing them in clusters. The goal is to build the scenic area into a 4A-level attraction within five years, and a 5A-level attraction within 8 to 10 years, establishing an international cultural tourism brand integrating culture, tourism, leisure, entertainment, shopping, and dining. Additionally, a master plan is underway to develop a cultural industry software park centered around media, animation and gaming, publishing, creative design, and audiovisual industries, in support of the growth of the Badashanren cultural industry. This will help the entire scenic area highlight five major features: ecological gardens, traditional architecture, folk customs, cultural art, and leisure tourism, greatly enhancing the cultural tourism industry.
