Xinzhou Academy

Xinzhou Academy is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

Situated on Golden Mountain on the southern bank of the Xin River in Xinzhou District, Shangrao City, it is one of the four great ancient academies of Jiangxi. Established in the 33rd year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1694), it was originally named Qujiang Academy. After being expanded in the 51st year of Kangxi (1712), it was renamed “Zhongling Lecture Hall.” In the 8th year of Qianlong (1743), a building was erected on the back mountain to worship Zhu Xi, and it was then renamed “Ziyang Academy.” It was not until the 46th year of Qianlong (1781) that it came to be called “Xinzhou Academy.”

The academy is shaded by lush greenery. On Zhongling Platform stands the four-cornered, upturned-eave Kui Xing Pavilion, which features carved beams and painted rafters, flower-patterned windows, and blue tiles, all exuding an antique charm. Climbing the pavilion offers a view over the Xin River and distant vistas of Mount Ling, providing a delightful experience.

In front of Zhongling Platform, there still remain ancient structures such as the Chunfeng Pavilion, Yitao Pavilion, Xixiu Pavilion, and Rixin Study. Although Yile Tang has been destroyed, the stone steles and rockeries in front of the hall are still intact.

Transportation: Within downtown Xinzhou District, Shangrao City, you can take various bus lines to get there. Alternatively, you can also take various rural passenger transport services from the suburbs and get off at Xueyuan Road.
