On the eastern side of the central section of the Luoxiao Mountain Range lies a vast, densely forested mountain stretching over 30 kilometers. With overlapping peaks, towering ancient trees, steep cliffs and deep valleys where streams meander, and mist-shrouded forests alive with birdsong...

This majestic mountain is the little-known Jiulong Mountain.

Located in the southeastern part of Sanwan Township, Yongxin County, Jiulong Mountain was once the second military base during the revolutionary struggle period of Jinggangshan. It played a vital role in the resistance against the “encirclement and suppression” campaigns by the Jinggangshan military and civilians. In January 1929, after the main forces of the Fourth Red Army and the Fifth Red Army advanced successively to southern Jiangxi, the Jinggangshan military base was occupied by enemy forces. In early February, the enemy launched an attack on the Jiulong Mountain military base with four regiments. Local armed forces from Yongxin, Ninggang, and Chaling fought fiercely against the enemy for three days and nights, relying on the rugged mountain terrain. To preserve their strength, they eventually withdrew, ensuring that “the armed forces were largely preserved, and most of the Party organizations remained intact.”

Jiulong Mountain boasts a glorious revolutionary history, but it is even more captivating for its picturesque, dreamlike scenery. Along the 5,000-meter stretch of forested cliffs and streams, there are multiple waterfall clusters and deep pools, such as those at Heshuping and XiajiuLong.

A stone path, hidden among swaying green foliage, appears and disappears along the mountain trail. Suddenly, a deafening roar echoes from deeper within the path, revealing a majestic waterfall. Glistening droplets, a pale blue mist, emerald pools, and dappled tree shadows come together to form a breathtaking Chinese painting that never tires the eye. Witnessing this scene, poetic lines such as “Is it the Milky Way descending from the ninth heaven?” and “Large and small pearls plunking on a jade plate” naturally spring to mind. Layer upon layer; the glistening droplets connect endlessly, offering a view of the waterfall reminiscent of watching clouds drift across the sky. This is a waterfall landscape at Heshuping. The waterfalls at XiajiuLong and other spots are carved into various shapes by rocks and shrubs: some resemble fairies dancing gracefully; others look like a white snake winding its way; some appear as giant whips lashing down from the heavens, sending crisp echoes splashing into the deep pools; while others are like strings of crystal-clear pearls inlaid amidst the gaps of green trees and blooming flowers... The unfathomable pools reflect the graceful silhouettes of ancient trees. Sunlight dots the water surface, resembling dancing golden snakes or heavenly maidens

scattering flowers. Occasionally, agile fish can be seen leaping swiftly out of the water, tracing a stunning arc before plunging back in, vanishing in an instant. Soon after, a clever head peeks out from among the swaying aquatic plants, as if playing hide-and-seek with visitors.

In addition to its waterfalls, Jiulong Mountain also features natural attractions such as ancient camphor trees, ginkgo trees, and wild orchid communities. Walking amidst these surroundings, one finds lush lawns shaded by ancient woods, wild orchids of various forms scattered across the landscape, with bees and butterflies fluttering about and fragrant blooms refreshing the senses. Venturing deeper into the dense forest, one might also spot animals such as sambar deer, pig-tailed macaques, and wild rabbits. To effectively protect these precious flora and fauna resources, Yongxin County is actively working to plan, package, and apply for national-level forest park status for the pristine forests around Jiulong Mountain.
