“Leaving at dawn the White Emperor crowned with cloud; I’ve sailed a thousand li through canyons in a day.” This is a seven-character quatrain written by the great Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai as he sailed eastward back to Jiangling. Since then, it has made White Emperor City world-famous. Today, it is a renowned scenic spot along the Three Gorges and the best place to view the “mighty Qutang Gate.”
Defeat at MianchengAfter being killed by the sword, Liu Bei, seeking revenge and ignoring the advice of his ministers, raised an army to attack Eastern Wu. Along the way, another sworn brother and vanguard of the campaign—Zhang Fei—was murdered by the rebel generals Fan Jiang and Zhang Da. Filled with rage and failing to strategize, Liu Bei pressed the army forward relentlessly. In the sixth month of the summer in the second year of the Zhangwu era, his forces were lured into a trap by the Eastern Wu general Lu Xun, who set fire to their 700-li military camp. Defeated at Yiling’s Xiaoting, Liu Bei retreated to White Emperor City. With the long-term division of the Three Kingdoms, the successive deaths of his two brothers, and the fresh heavy blow to his army, both national affairs and personal vengeance plunged Liu Bei into worry and anger that led to illness. Seeing his life slipping away, he summoned the chancellor Zhuge Liang to rush to him overnight. In the Yong’an Palace, Liu Bei entrusted his son Liu Shan (Adou) to Zhuge Liang. He then passed away. Since then, White Emperor City has become even more famous worldwide due to this widely told and beloved story.

Transportation information:Take a high-speed hydrofoil from Chongqing Chaotianmen Dock and arrive in Fengjie New Town in7hours, then transfer to a bus to White Emperor City (30minutes,5yuan per/person).From Chongqing Longtousi Station to-Fengjie, the drive takes about5.5hours. From Fengjie to White Emperor City, you can take a taxi for a round trip.
