Canglong Mountain Grottoes

The Canglong Mountain Grottoes are located in Houxizuo Village, Fengfeng Mining District, Handan City. The grottoes were carved on the summit of Drum Mountain and are divided into eastern and western sections. The eastern section contains five Tang Dynasty niches, carved into the eastern rock face of a protruding hill. These niches house a total of 37 statues, with the largest niche measuring 1.15 meters in height and 1.13 meters in width. The other niches range from 0.4 to 0.7 meters in height. The statues are full-bodied and realistic, with smooth, flowing lines. The western section features one grotto located on the southern cliff of the mountain peak. The grotto has a slightly rectangular floor plan, measuring 2.3 meters in depth, 3.3 meters in width, and 1.47 meters in height. The entrance is square, with a coiled dragon pillar carved on each side. Inside the grotto, there are three seated Buddha statues carved out of the rock. On the rear wall of the cave is an inscription documenting the major earthquake that occurred in the 14th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1834). It is now a key cultural heritage site under the protection of Hebei Province.
