Site of the Former Tong’er Mine

The site of the former Tong’er Mine is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The site of the former Tong’er Mine, also known as Tongshun No. 2 Shaft, is located in Hezhuang Town in the northwest of Fengfeng Mining District. Construction of the shaft began in 1957, and it officially went into operation in 1960. Tong’er Mine was one of the 156 major projects constructed with Soviet assistance across China in the 1950s. It still retains a fully preserved original Soviet-aided system, including the main shaft headframe, main shaft winding house, main shaft hoist, auxiliary shaft headframe, auxiliary shaft winding house, coal conveyor tunnel, coal storage tower, office building, electrical and mechanical department, foundry workshop, machining workshop, fitter workshop, as well as a complete main and auxiliary shaft hoisting system, raw coal sorting and storage system. Both the main and auxiliary shafts are vertical-shaft hoists—the main shaft uses skip hoisting, while the auxiliary shaft uses double-deck cage hoisting. The main shaft headframe stands 34.75 meters tall, the auxiliary shaft headframe 25.18 meters tall, and the shaft depth reaches 434 meters. The storage system features a brick-concrete structure typical of the time.

The former Tong’er Mine has retained its original purpose, function, and form, embodying distinctive characteristics of its era, and holds an important place in the history of coal industry development and construction in New China.
