The Anderson Library Building is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Era: 1927

Location: Peiyuan Middle School, Kaiyuan Subdistrict, Licheng District, Quanzhou City

Introduction: The building faces northeast and is situated southwest, covering an area of 1,246 square meters. It has a reinforced concrete structure and is 24.8 meters high. The first to fourth floors feature Western architectural style, while the fifth floor exhibits a traditional Chinese pavilion style, with doors and windows modeled after the architectural style of churches in London, England. Anderson (1876–1959) was a British aristocrat. In 1903, he was sent by the Presbyterian Church of England to Quanzhou to establish Peiyuan Middle School. In 1927, alumni donated funds to build the “Anderson Library Building” in honor of Anderson’s contributions to the school. In 1995, Taiwanese alumni contributed one million yuan for its renovation. The building serves as a bond for alumni of Peiyuan Middle School from around the world and Taiwan to connect with each other.

The Anderson Library Building is a modern building that combines Chinese and Western architectural styles. With its unique architectural design and distinctive shape, as well as its rich collection of books, it was well-known in southern Fujian during the Republican era.

In 2009, the Anderson Library Building was announced by the People’s Government of Fujian Province as part of the seventh batch of Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.

On October 7, 2019, the Anderson Library Building was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Kaiyuan Subdistrict: Located in the northeastern part of Licheng District, Kaiyuan Subdistrict is bordered by the West and North Ring Roads, East and West Streets, and Chongfu Road, and neighbors both Lizhong Subdistrict and Donghu, Qingyuan, and Beifeng Subdistricts of Fengze District. The subdistrict covers an area of 3.18 square kilometers. It governs 12 community neighborhood committees, with a total of 17,484 households and a population of 63,612, including 48,007 permanent residents.
