The Old Fan Zhi Ancient Mansion

The mansion consists of three large courtyards, each laid out in an almost identical five-courtyard, three-bay pattern. The courtyards are separated by firewalls, with side walls featuring doors that connect them. On both sides of the main courtyards are two rows of wing rooms, forming an expansive and architecturally distinctive compound with rich layering and structural features. This grand residence was established during the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong period by Wu Yifei, a renowned physician from Quanzhou. His proprietary traditional Chinese medicine, “Fan Zhi Wan Ying Shen Qu,” gained widespread popularity and demand after proving highly effective during Zuo Zongtang’s campaigns in the Western Regions. This led to a surge in buyers and immense wealth, which enabled him to construct this grand mansion. The mansion’s impressive scale and unique architectural style serve as important physical evidence for the study of Fujian’s southern stone residences from the Qing Dynasty.
