Former Residence of Huang Zonghan

The former residence of Huang Zonghan is a cultural relic protection unit of Quanzhou City.

The former residence of Huang Zonghan is located in Zhenfu Lane on Zhongshan Middle Road in downtown Quanzhou. It consists of two residential buildings, each with three bays and three courtyards in depth, as well as wing rooms, a study, and a garden, covering an area of over one mu. The residence was the mansion of Huang Zonghan, who served as the Viceroy of Liangguang and the Minister of Commerce during the Xianfeng era (1851–1861) of the Qing Dynasty. The main structure still stands today and is a typical example of the residential compounds where official families in Quanzhou gathered during the Qing Dynasty.

Huang Zonghan (1803–1864), also known as Shouchen (some sources say his courtesy name was Jiyun and his art name was Shouchen), was a native of Dengxianpu in Quanzhou (now Zhenfu Lane). He was born in 1803 during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty. After losing his father at the age of seven, he was raised by his eldest legitimate brother, Huang Zongcheng (a successful candidate in the imperial examinations at the provincial level in 1819). In 1834, during the Daoguang era, he passed the imperial examination at the provincial level and the following year achieved top honors in the metropolitan examination, becoming a presented scholar. Initially selected as a bachelor in the Hanlin Academy, he later transferred to become an official in the Ministry of War, serving as a military secretary. He held successive positions including vice director and director of various bureaus, was promoted to imperial censor and then presented official, and in 1845 was appointed as the Director of Grain Transport in Guangdong.
