Former Site of Quanzhou Bookstore

The former site of the Quanzhou Bookstore is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Quanzhou Bookstore was located at the Quanzhou Xinhua Bookstore on Zhongshan Middle Road in Licheng District.

In mid-December 1926, Communist Party members Tang Sheng and Hong Pingmin, dispatched by the Working Committee of the Xiamen Special Branch of the Chinese Communist Party, rented a storefront at the entrance of Xiaoquanjian Lane on Zhongshan Road in Quanzhou with the help of the local left-wing Kuomintang member Chen Shengming, and established the “Quanzhou Bookstore.” The store sold publications such as Guide, China Youth, The Communist Manifesto, and An Introduction to Dialectical Materialism, as well as literary works by Lu Xun and Mao Dun, becoming the first important hub for spreading Marxism and progressive ideas in the Quanzhou area. Staff members included Bai Lihua, Bai Liming, and Hong Chinnong. The bookstore was shut down in April 1927 during the “Party Purge” in Quanzhou.
