Niutou Mazu Temple is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

Year built: Qing Dynasty

Location: Haigan Road, Niutou Town, Fuding City

Introduction: Originally constructed during the Ming Dynasty, it was rebuilt during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty (1662–1722) and renovated again in the 20th year of the Qianlong reign (1755). Covering an area of 527.5 square meters, it consists of several parts including the main gate (octagonal gate), pavilion, courtyard, side corridors, and the main hall. The main gate features a double-eaved, hanging-roof wooden structure. The main hall has large and intricately carved brackets, spandrels, and beams. The spacious front plaza includes flagpoles nearly 10 meters tall, composed of stone bases, double-layered stone cups, and stone poles. The middle cup is inscribed on all four sides with the characters “Heavenly Sacred Mother,” along with the text “Erected in the 2nd Year of the Guangxu Reign, 1876, Autumn, by the People of Niutou Society, Yishan, 15th District” and “Built by the Public of Niutou Society.”

Protected area: Extending 20 meters outward from all sides of the building.

In 2009, Niutou Mazu Temple was designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

Niutou Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Fuding City. Established as the Niutou District in 1949, restructured as a commune in 1958, and officially became a town in 1987. Located in the central part of the city, it borders Shacheng Port to the east and is 10 kilometers from the municipal government. It covers an area of 109 square kilometers with a population of 40,000. Provincial Highway Sha-Lv passes through the town. The town administers 18 village committees including Shanzhe, Xiyangwei, Guoyang, Sanmaxi, Mayang, Houliang, Da’e, Shangzhai, Guanyang, Jiangmei, Bailiu, Houjing, Wengxi, Guoxian, Daping, Zhanshan, Longtian, and Juzhou, as well as the Niutou Neighborhood Committee.
