Shilan Castle

Shilan Castle is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

Shilan Castle is located in Shilan Village, Xiamen She Ethnic Township, Fuding City, and dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Description: Built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1573–1620) to defend against Japanese pirates, it was constructed against a mountain. The roughly trapezoidal-shaped castle has walls made of granite, with a perimeter of 1,200 meters. The surviving structures include the north gate and over 200 meters of ruined walls. The inner height of the gate is 2.7 meters, the outer height is 4.7 meters, the inner width is 1.5 meters, the outer width is 15 meters, and the length is 5 meters. There is a stone stairway over 300 meters long leading up to the gate from the foot of the mountain.

In 2013, Shilan Castle was designated as part of the eighth batch of Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Units by the People's Government of Fujian Province.

Protected area: An additional 20 meters extending outward from the perimeter of the castle walls.

Xiamen She Ethnic Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Fuding City. Established as the Xiamen Commune in 1958, it became a township in 1987 and was renamed Xiamen She Ethnic Township in 1993. Located in the southern part of the city, it borders the East China Sea to the southeast and is 30.5 kilometers from the municipal government. Covering an area of 57.7 square kilometers with a population of 17,000, it is traversed by the provincial highway Sha-Lv section. The township administers nine village committees: Xiamen, Dongjia, Baiyang, Doumentou, Qingshi, Yujing, Qingyutou, Ruiyun, and Qingwan. The main agricultural products are rice, tubers, and wheat, along with soybeans, vegetables, and tea. Aquatic products include yellow croaker, cuttlefish, hairtail, oysters, and seaweed.
