Ancient City of Taining – Xiaxia Grand Canyon

The Xiaxia Grand Canyon Scenic Area is the core site of the Taining UNESCO Global Geopark and has been hailed by experts as a “model site for UNESCO Global Geoparks.”

The scenic area lies on the geological fault zone between Shaowu in Fujian and Heyuan in Guangdong. It developed as a youthful Danxia landform canyon landscape within a rift basin that formed approximately 65 million years ago. The canyon is deep, serene, and long, with colorful Danxia cliffs, steep yet beautiful terrain, and lush vegetation inside the valley. Vines climb rocks and trees, while streams babble softly, creating a scene reminiscent of a paradise on earth. Major geological features include Danxia caves, slot canyons, linear valleys, red cliffs, stone walls, isolated peaks, stone pillars, collapsed debris deposits, barrier lakes, through caves, platy cross-bedding, glacial erratics, and stalactites. Key attractions include Questioning-the-Sky Rock, Three Immortals Rock, Prayer-to-the-Sky Canyon, Sky-Piercing Sword, Buddha’s Foot Rock, Turtle Climbing the Wall, Dome Rock, Emerald Bamboo Lake, Cloud Cliff Ridge, Golden Dragon Linear Valley Group, Golden Turtle Temple Cascades, Linear Waterfall, China’s No.1 Vine, Millennium King Fir, and the Wall of a Thousand Vines.
