In the summer of 1933, the Nationalist army launched its fifth “encirclement and suppression” campaign against the Central Soviet Area. Faced with the massive offensive by the Nationalist forces, the CPC Central Bureau of the Soviet Area and the Central Revolutionary Military Commission made a series of deployments for the anti-encirclement struggle in the Tai’nin region. On November 27, the General Headquarters of the First Front Red Army issued a secret order requiring the Min-Gan Military District to strengthen mass self-defense forces and establish strongholds in areas such as Tai’nin. In December 1933, after the fall of Lichuan, the capital of the Min-Gan Provincial Government of the CPC, some offices of the Political Security Bureau of the Min-Gan Provincial Government and its affiliated armed Political Security Detachment moved from Jianning to Jixian Academy in Tai’nin. In January 1934, Tai’nin County established a City Defense Command and a Battlefield Committee, with Yang Liangsheng, Secretary of the Tai’nin County CPC Committee, also serving as Commander of the City Defense Command and Chairman of the Battlefield Committee. In the same month, the Tai’nin County CPC Committee held a county-wide Party Congress at Jixian Academy, which lasted three days. Commander Zhu De attended and delivered a report on the situation, while Yang Liangsheng also gave a work report. Under the slogan of “Everything for the War,” the congress put forward specific tasks to the people of the entire county: urgently mobilize to expand the Red Army; develop local armed forces to combat and eliminate defense corps and Big Sword Societies, and consolidate the Soviet Area; carry out effective scorched-earth tactics—besieging and containing the encroaching Nationalist army. After the meeting, the City Defense Command and the Battlefield Committee mobilized over 10,000 people to build fortifications and bunkers around the county town. They intensified the production of pine cannons and tin-shell cannons, sharpened bamboo spikes, and planted them at key roadways to disrupt transportation and hinder the advance of the Nationalist army. At the same time, the people of the entire county voluntarily tightened their belts, gathering large quantities of grain and dried vegetables in the urban area to supplement the Red Army’s supplies. A series of urgent wartime preparations, including effective scorched-earth measures, were carried out to bolster the battle to defend the Soviet Area and added vital strength to the effort.
The site of the Tai’nin County CPC Representative Conference and the Political Security Bureau of the Min-Gan Provincial Government is located at Jixian Academy in Tai’nin, originally named Sanxian Academy, which was founded in the 48th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1709). In the 21st year of the Guangxu reign (1895), Sanxian Academy was destroyed in a fire and was rebuilt the following year, renamed Jixian Academy. In the 21st year of the Guangxu reign, Jixian Academy was converted into a higher elementary school. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Jixian Academy was demolished to make way for the construction of the campus of Tai’nin County No. 1 Middle School.
