Former Site of the First Front Red Army Command, Red Army Headquarters, and Former Residences of Zhu De and Zhou Enlai

The former site of the First Front Red Army Command, Red Army Headquarters, and the former residences of Zhu De and Zhou Enlai is a cultural relic protection unit of Taining County and a classic red tourism attraction.

The Chen Family Courtyard, which houses the former site of the First Front Red Army Command, Red Army Headquarters, and the former residences of Zhu De and Zhou Enlai, is located at No. 12, Lingshang Street, Hongwei Administrative Village, Shan Cheng Town, Taining County.

From August 1933 to February 1934, whenever Red Army leaders such as Zhu De and Zhou Enlai came to Taining, they stayed at the Red Army Headquarters in the Chen Family Courtyard. The left side of the first hall of the headquarters was the Cipher Section, where the Red Army relied on a single radio set to direct battles. The left side of the second hall was the Political Department of the Red Army Headquarters, where Political Department Director Yang Shangkun once worked; the right side was the former residence of Zhou Enlai, the Red Army’s General Political Commissar. The left side of the third hall was the Headquarters Staff Section, where Chief of Staff Ye Jianying formulated battle plans; the right side was the former residence of Commander-in-Chief Zhu De. During their stay at the Chen Family Courtyard, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, and others personally led cadres and soldiers from the headquarters’ directly affiliated units to clean the sewers, sweep the streets, paint slogans, and participate in the city’s Clean-Up Week campaign.

The Chen Family Courtyard, which houses the former site of the First Front Red Army Command, Red Army Headquarters, and the former residences of Zhu De and Zhou Enlai, is a Qing Dynasty-era residential building facing south with a north orientation. It consists of a gateway hall, front hall, middle hall, rear hall, 28 wing rooms, a backyard garden, flower stands, and more, all part of a brick-and-wood structured, courtyard-style building. It has a total width of 16.65 meters, an overall depth of 45 meters, a floor area of 747 square meters, with over 70 wing rooms on both sides, covering a total area of more than 2,000 square meters.

In 1982, the Chen Family Courtyard, which houses the former site of the First Front Red Army Command, Red Army Headquarters, and the former residences of Zhu De and Zhou Enlai, was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Taining County by the Taining County People’s Government.
