The sites where General Zhu De was welcomed into the city are located at the Sanli Pavilion in Damaxu Natural Village, at the entrance of the village by the small river in Meiqiao Administrative Village, Shan Cheng Town, Taining County (next to the ancient county road from Taining to neighboring Jiangxi Province’s Lichuan County), as well as at Chaojing Gate, the northern gate of the ancient city wall of Taining County.

In October 1932, in order to crush the fourth “encirclement and suppression” campaign launched by the Kuomintang army, Zhu De, Commander-in-Chief of the First Front Army of the Red Army, and Zhou Enlai, General Political Commissar, among others, issued the “Jian-Li-Tai Campaign Plan.” On October 16, Zhou Enlai and Zhu De led various corps of the First Front Army of the Red Army in advancing toward Jian, Li, and Tai from Guangchang along five routes. On the 19th, the 22nd Red Army recovered Taining County. On the 22nd, the 22nd Red Army continued to advance toward Shaowu, pursuing and annihilating the remaining forces of Kuomintang’s Zhou Zhiquan. Liu Bojian, Director of the Political Department of the 5th Red Army Corps, led his troops into the county town to replace the 22nd Red Army in garrison duty. In the history of the Red Army’s three liberations of Taining, this marked the second liberation of Taining, ushering the Taining Soviet Area into a phase of recovery and development. Subsequently, the Taining County Revolutionary Committee, the Provisional County Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in Taining, the Urban District Committee and District Revolutionary Committee, as well as mass organizations such as the Communist Youth League, the Young Pioneers, and the General Labor Union, were rapidly restored and established. In early November, Commander-in-Chief Zhu De of the Red Army visited Taining for the first time from Jianning to guide the communization efforts in Taining. Upon hearing that Commander Zhu was coming, some local residents excitedly went to Damaxu Sanli Pavilion, three li from the city, to welcome him. Military and civilian personnel in the urban area gave Zhu De a warm welcome at Chaojing Gate, the ancient city gate, and escorted him into the county town. That evening, Zhu De attended a mass rally held at the Chenghuang Temple near Xiaodongmen, where he delivered a political situation report, calling on the people of the entire county to further engage in the agrarian revolution and crush the Kuomintang’s fourth “encirclement and suppression.” Under the correct leadership of Zhu De, Commander-in-Chief of the First Front Army of the Central Soviet Area, and Zhou Enlai, General Political Commissar, the Fourth Counter-Encirclement Campaign of the Central Soviet Area summarized the successful experiences of the previous three campaigns, adhered to the correct operational guidelines, acted based on reality, resolutely adopted the strategy of retreating, shifted from passivity to initiative, and thereby achieved victory.

Chaojing Gate is part of the ancient city wall of Taining County, constructed during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. In 1976, it was completely demolished to extend and widen Heping Avenue and open up the northern part of the city.
