Former site of Red Square

The former site of Red Square is a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of Red Square is located at the current site of the county government in Beicheng, Shan Town, Taining County, covering an area of about 20,000 square meters.

After the victory of the Fourth Counter-“Encirclement and Suppression” Campaign in the Central Soviet Area, the revolutionary situation in the Soviet region flourished. In May 1933, the Soviet Government of the Min-Gan Provincial District and the Min-Gan Military District were officially established. In late June, the Taining Independent Battalion, in coordination with the Red Army of the Min-Gan Military District, launched an attack on the Nationalist Army’s 56th Division, Tian Yufan Regiment, stationed in the county town. On July 8, the 1st Independent Division of the Min-Gan Military District and a portion of the Northern Fujian Independent Division entered the county town. The Taining County Committee of the Communist Party of China and the County Soviet Government also relocated back to the urban area from the Datian District. The Red Army recaptured Taining County Town for the third time. On July 9, over 4,000 people, including more than 3,000 party members, Soviet officials, and workers and peasants, as well as approximately 1,000 soldiers from the Red Army forces and the Taining County Independent Battalion, gathered in the northern city square to hold a grand victory celebration meeting. At the meeting, the Red Army reported on the success of the Fourth Counter-“Encirclement and Suppression” Campaign in the Central Soviet Area. The venue was packed with cheering crowds, and jubilant shouts echoed through the sky. On the night of September 18, thousands of soldiers and civilians from across the county gathered again here to solemnly commemorate the second anniversary of the September 18 Incident. Red Army leaders such as Zhu De and Zhou Enlai attended the event and delivered important speeches. Immediately after the meeting, a large number of young people from the urban area signed up to join the Red Army. During the period when the Headquarters of the First Front Army of the Red Army and the Red Army General Headquarters were stationed in Taining, Zhu De and Zhou Enlai also frequently led Red Army staff, some soldiers, and local residents to participate in voluntary labor at the northern city square.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Taining County People's Government named the northern city square Red Square. Due to urban redevelopment needs, around 1970, the county government office building was constructed on the original site of Red Square. Red Square was then relocated westward to the current location of the athletic field, where a platform was set up on a dormitory building next to the sports ground, inscribed with the four characters “Red Square” as a commemoration.

Shan Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Taining County and the seat of the county government. Established as Chengguan Town in 1956, renamed Hongqi Commune in 1958, changed to Chengguan Commune in 1961, and re-designated as a town in 1984. It is located in the central part of the county, covering an area of 228 square kilometers with a population of 35,000. The provincial road Xiagan Line runs through the area.
